Maintaining Uptime and Maximizing Your IT Budget

You have an entire system to keep running, and downtime only digs deeper into your bottom line. Instead of settling for systems not functioning at full capacity, while waiting to afford a replacement, why not purchase a high quality refurbished machine?

What are the benefits of buying refurbished products?

Significantly discounted prices are one of the main advantages to buying refurbished electronics.

Many people are concerned about the quality of refurbished products.  One of the most important things to know about refurbished items, is that there are many reasons a product is considered refurbished and most of those aren’t what you might think.

  • Shipping & Handling: Small scratches or dents on products that occur during shipment often require retailers to return the item to the manufacturer, who then labels it for refurbishment.

  • Demonstration units: Items that have been used solely for display in places such as retail stores are often repackaged as refurbished products as they can no longer be sold as new.

  • Open box: Have you ever purchased something, and after opening the package realized it wasn’t what you meant to buy? Although unused, once the box is open, the item is no longer sold as “new” in  most cases.

Effects on the Planet:

With electronic device production at the highest point in history, the ever-rising amount of e-waste has become a global concern. As reported by the EPA, as much as 60% of electronics end up being tossed out with the trash. Although several states have laws in place to prevent this practice, it is still legal in many states. Once devices are in landfills, the concern becomes the hazardous chemicals they contain leaching into groundwater. In addition, when electronic waste containing plastic is burned, it can emit dioxin, which is a known human carcinogen.

We can make a major impact just by properly recycling and reselling working electronics. According to the EPA, recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent of the electricity used by more than 3,500 US homes in a year. And for every million cell phones we recycle, 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.

Instead of producing endless supplies of electronics, we can repair and resell devices that will function as well as new items. The energy saved and benefit to the environment can be staggering, since as much as 80% of greenhouse gases produced by a computer occur during manufacture.
